Why did you decide to write an autobiographical book with you as the subject?

My first collection, Your Dead Body is My Welcome Mat, was a mixture of fiction and nonfiction. After the book was published, the nonfictional elements began to feel a bit cheap to me. I kept hearing from readers how much the book affected them and heard stories they hadn’t disclosed to anyone else.
These experiences really shaped my idea of the type of work I want to create. Though an imagined reality can be as moving as real life events, I wanted to have my next collection focus only on my experience. Another interesting thing about Your Dead Body is My Welcome Mat is that I refrained from talking about my parent’s abuse. I hadn’t noticed this until after the book came out. Holding onto family secrets was so ingrained in me that, though I was disclosing about my neighbor and being molested, I didn’t talk about how my parents treated me.

2.I want to know what you feel is both the limitations and the advantages of writing in prose/verse...at least as it pertains to you?

I don’t feel limited by poetry. It suits my temperament. I don’t have the patience of a novelist. My writings for the past ten years have been autobiographical or based on true events. I don’t have a desire to enter into a fabricated or false world. Though I might not be patient, I’m highly attentive. This works as a writer and reader of poetry.
The biggest thing limiting poetry isn’t the form as much as it is the public’s perception of poetry. I think with more exposure, people would enjoy poetry more.

3.Why did you choose to use the real names in the book? -esp Debbie May.

I always get questions about my use of real events and sometimes not changing names. I tried to search for Debbie a few times over the years. Before the book went to print I sent out dozens of Facebook messages searching for her. I couldn’t find her and proceeded without permission. I’d like to think she would be okay with what is said about her in the poem. I think of it as an honoring. I wasn’t innocent, for quite awhile I was the one laughing with the kids who made fun of her. That changed for me the day I reference in the poem. <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 162px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/TSQOXbMh_9I/AAAAAAAAAOg/4j4CNznWU5k/s200/steve2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558583635682131922" />I didn’t feel like I had the “social capital” to stick up for her. My fear was that I was on a par with her; the most hated, talked about, and teased girl in the school. What might feel like I’m dragging people’s real life into my book is really, for me, about my own life and growth.
The people are mentioned because they were a part of my life. I want to write the most emotionally and historically accurate poem I can about my life. I don’t intend on keeping someone else’s secrets but I wouldn’t write a slanderous poem either.

4.What sets your teaching apart from some of the other workshops and creative writing teachers?

I think I have a gift for articulating complexity simply. Mark Doty called my work “plainspoken.” This is accurate for my poetry but also for my teaching style. My teaching style does differ in that I use humor often and I’m forever telling analogies. Actually, I might be the kind of analogies: usually centered around baking, dating, driving, or gardening.
My enthusiasm for poetry and the writing process comes through as a teacher. I have faith in the page and process. I try hard to give that to my students.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 125px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/TSQJNRZ37-I/AAAAAAAAAOA/X4uHfeRm7ek/s200/Inheritance%2Bby%2BSteven%2BReigns%2Bsmall%2Brez.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558577963696910306" />

5.How has being a teacher helped shaped your own writings?

Teaching has kept me connected with some of the basics of writing and being a writer. The advice I give my classes is the same advice I adhere to myself. It would be easy for me to continually stumble over words and expressions, taking hours to complete a first stanza. But instead, I remind myself what I tell my students, that the creative process and critical process should be separated. Get it out on the paper first, and later on you can reword, reorder, and edit.
Teaching hasn’t shaped my writing but it has shaped my life. I enjoy connecting people with information. Every time I teach a class I’m sharing something I deeply love. Teaching has enriched my life.

6. I love that you write autobiographical. I think it’s brave that you own your past and use it to teach and inspire. Because of you, am I inspired to write my second book of poetry. Any advice?

The first piece of advice I’d give for any writer is to write. So often our perfectionism or desire to “do it right” gets in the way of writing. Our judgment and concern for appropriateness is just another form of resistance. Make sure these don’t get in the way. If you want to write, start putting ink on the page.
Our lives are big and broad. Wanting to write an autobiographical collection may feel overwhelming. Start by writing what moves you, what you find interesting about you’ve experienced, felt, and witnessed. Remember those assignments in school where you had to write what you did on summer vacation? Give yourself such an assignment but designate years, a car you owned, or places you’ve lived. This doesn’t mean you create a collection of poems about your 1983 Honda Accord or about 1366 Solana Avenue; this assignment is designed to help you pull things from your past and reexamine them.

7.I completely agree with how you use Debbie’s name. I had a straight male friend recently who called me after the “It Gets Better” videos went public. He told me that when he was younger he had made fun of a gay kid when he was younger. He didn’t know how to contact him now, naturally, but he called to apologize to me saying I never realized the struggle that gay men and women have. I felt that there was power in his apology – as if perhaps he was apologizing for all those kids that had made fun of me somehow when I was growing up. It’s great that you use your writing as a way to bridge the past and the present. Do you use this when you teach? Share an analogy.

That’s a great story. I’m awed at how quickly the “It Gets Better” videos were created and circulated. I think that’s great but I also don’t want us to just give queer kids a PROMISE of a good future, I want them to have a tolerable present. I’ve taught writing in Middle Schools and to queer youth groups across the country. I was doing this over ten years ago because adolescence can be such a painful and awkward time. I really wanted to connect those youth to books that they could relate to and to the writing process.
Writing about our past automatically brings it into the present. Hopefully, we have gained perspective or insight that allows for enough emotional distance to write about it. Writing in the heat of the moment for me might feel good but it has never produced my favorite poems. As a teacher I’m interested in the experiential. It is okay for students to write about something that is emotionally urgent and possibly create a poem that will never get published. Getting out those emotions, at that time, might offer more of a sense of satisfaction than writing a prize winning poem. As a teacher, I’m happy they are connecting with writing and that they have found one of its uses. If one is only writing poetry to be published, then they have missed out on more than half of the experience. There’s a joy to writing, expressing ourselves, and finding a new narrative for old experiences.

8.What is next for you?

I still occasionally write autobiographically but most of my creative focus has been on a project of narrative poetry that does not involve me or my past experiences. I’ve been enjoying not writing about myself. There’s something about it that feels safer. My life isn’t up on a platter for people to know about or discuss. The joy of writing this new stuff just isn’t about not disclosing, I’m quite happy to have a different subject matter. Always writing about myself can be horribly boring. Only a handful of friends know what I’m working on. I’m keeping this one close to me and not revealing too much. This isn’t out of superstation but out of a desire to protect my vision for what I want. If people were to devalue the idea it would create more doubt. I also think that talking about a project can sometimes take the place of actually doing it.<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 123px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/TSQCSLZIL_I/AAAAAAAAANg/6fhOcJi88YM/s200/steve8.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558570351401119730" />
9.What do you think of encouraging other writers?

Flannery O’Connor has a quote about her wish that more writers were stifled and recently Fran Lebovitz has said something similar. It’s hard for me to find the humor in it. I think published writers laugh at it in hopes it doesn’t apply to them. “If I laugh at this joke, no one will think it’s about me.” Maybe non-published writers laugh at it too. “See, my creative dream was foolish. I should leave writing to the others.” I don’t buy into the elitism that surrounds the literary world. Writers who don’t encourage other writers are self-hating or simply trying to narrow the competition. Why wouldn’t you want more and more people to share in one of your life’s loves. To me, it doesn’t matter that we’re all not going to play on the same court or in the same stadium. What maters is that we’re all participating in the craft and joy of writing. To stifle others is as ridiculous as Lebron James going to a neighborhood basketball court and telling the weekend players they should stop playing. It’s about the joy of doing it, not about where the doing it will lead you.

10.Have you experienced this kind of elitism?

Not recently. For my first book I had a publisher decline it and suggest I wait until I’m in my 40’s and “have something to really say.” That hurt and felt very dismissive. I was tenuous and kept trying to get it published. I’m glad I didn’t listen to her. That means I still wouldn’t have a book out! I’m not so sure what prompted her was elitism. She was an older lesbian and maybe she simply lacked interest in the stories I was telling.

For the most part, I’ve received extreme support from other writers. It’s nice to know that my poems have received such praise. It feels like a great pat on the back.

11.You’ve been busy this year with readings?

Yes, I’ve been fortunate enough to have been invited numerous places. My book release party at Skylight Bookstore in Los Angeles was huge. Inheritance is listed as their 16th best selling book for 2010. It’s the only poetry book on their top list of 25 and it beat out these great writers like Brett Easton Ellis and Juno Diaz. I was awed after reading of my place on the list. I was sponsored by Poets & Writers grant to read at The Atlanta Queer Literary Festival. It was a great event where I shared the stage with one of my favorite poets Collin Kelly. I’ve also read at Saints & Sinners in New Orleans, Different Light in San Francisco, and numerous venues in Los Angeles. I recently read at Antioch University for a talk on Gay Male Identity. I enjoyed discussing how my gay identity inhabits the work and what it means to me to be a gay poet.

12.Are you pleased with the good reception Inheritance has received?

I’m thrilled. It has really been the best case scenario. It’s received many great reviews and I get emails from readers living in towns I’ve never heard of. To me it proves that poetry isn’t dead, this has gotten more praise and attention than some fiction books. I also love the lasting quality of a book. 2010 won’t be its only life. I’ve discovered books long after their initial publication and the late introduction never takes away from the power of the book. I’m in hopes readers find Inheritance for years to come.

13.Do you see yourself as a writer or a teacher?

I don’t think I could have become a teacher without being a writer. One of the best gifts I can give my students is my own experience. I know writing, I know the process, I know how to generate good ideas, stifle critical voices, mix up forms, and I deeply trust the process. I’m an experienced tour guide through the terrain of finding your voice and style.

14.How can someone take one of your classes?

I don’t have any classes to the general public scheduled yet for 2011. The best thing to do is keep checking my website for announcements. www.stevenreigns.com I’ll be teaching a workshop for GLBT Seniors starting in February and later in the year a workshop for people living with HIV. I’m sure there might be something for National Poetry Month.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 133px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/TSQIhryfI8I/AAAAAAAAAN4/1z0Hk93Hnmg/s200/steve6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558577214865220546" />

Jan 2010: Jeffrey Reddick

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/S2CiXLdbCGI/AAAAAAAAAMA/zmKoRcX88Cw/s200/Jeffrey.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431519669705705570" />

1) What is the biggest challenge you feel that writers face today?

A) I think the biggest challenge for writers is being at the mercy of an industry run by people who are more focused on the bottom line than creativity. Personally, I think you can write a great film that’s also commercially successful. But the current development process is geared towards making scripts as safe and mainstream as possible. I come from a studio background, having worked at New Line Cinema for over 10 years. And there was a real maverick spirit there back in the day. They weren’t afraid to try new things. But a lot of executives are so afraid of greenlighting a film that fails, that they hire a stream of writers to rewrite the script to death and resort to formulas that appeal to the lowest common denominator. They’ll “dumb down” a script in the name of mass appeal. Or do remakes over original content because it feels safer.

But on the bright side, with the advent of the digital age, it’s a lot easier for writers to get their scripts produced outside of the studio system and find an audience.

2) What has been one of your biggest challenges specifically?

A) My biggest challenge stems from the first question. It’s trying to find that fine line between creativity and commerce. But in regards to a particular project, it was probably writing the remake of “Day of The Dead.” That was a situation where I took the job, fully intending to make a film that appealed to the fans of the original film and brought the story into modern times. But after I was hired, it became clear that they didn’t want to make that movie. So, it was a constant struggle to keep in the themes, characters and set pieces that I knew the fans of the original would want to see. In the end, I lost that fight. Writers just don’t have the clout in the film world that they have in television. I say that was my biggest personal challenge, because it was just about me, but the fans of Romero’s original film. I’m a lifelong horror geek and I knew touching a George Romero film was a risky gamble. But I sincerely thought we could make a film that was reverent to the original and introduce a new audience his classic. And when we didn’t achieve that, I felt like I let down the fans.

3) Where do you find your inspiration to write?

A) My inspiration comes from having a story that I want to tell. The thing I love about the horror genre is that you can touch on so many universal themes and affect people on a primal level. I love scaring people, but I also try and layer in elements to make them think. (I hope that doesn’t sound pretentious.) With “Final Destination” it was the fear of death. With “Tamara” it was a female-empowerment, revenge-of-the-geek story. My latest script deals with the consequences of not helping your fellow man…or woman.

4) What current projects are you working on?

A) I’ve got several projects I’m really excited about. The first is a supernatural TV series I created with a dear friend, David Sporn. Gale Anne Hurd is producing it. She created “The Terminator” with James Cameron and produced it, along with “Aliens,” “The Abyss,” “Tremors” and many other great genre films. So having Gale involved is amazing. I’m also putting the finishing touches on a new script that’s part thriller/part supernatural horror. And I’m close to locking in the financing for my directorial debut.

5) Is horror your favorite genre?

A) Horror is hands down my favorite genre. I started watching horror films when I was a wee lad. In the beginning, it was all about the gore. But over time, I began to appreciate the fact that you could scare people on a much deeper level. My friends, who write comedies, love to hear the audience laugh during their films. I love to hear them gasp and scream.

6) You, of course, are mostly known for the Final Destination franchise. Have your tried writing anything else besides horror?

A) I’ve written one thriller and I had a spooky animated series optioned by The Cartoon Network. Most of my stuff has been horror films or thrillers. But I’ve got a cool sci-fi project I want to tackle someday. And at some point, I’d like to write a comedy. I don’t know how it’ll turn out, but some of my friends say I’m funny. But I think they may just be humoring me.

7) What is your ideal writing sanctuary?

A) I usually write at home or at a coffee shop. Writing is a very solitary thing. I find that if I write at home too much, I start getting stir crazy because I’m not interacting with people. I like the coffee shop, because it’s such a cliché.  Seriously though, I have a lot of friends there, so I can get my social interaction and not feel like such a hermit.

8)Do you think that being openly gay affects your writing?

A) Every facet of who we are, and what we’ve been through, influences our writing. I think one thing about my scripts, which isn’t standard for horror films, is that I like to write strong female characters. And I don’t do it in any kind of fetish way, where the girls are dressed slutty, kissing other girls and then kicking ass. I think that’s more of a straight male fantasy of a tough chick. I’ve always respected the strength of women, mainly because my mom is one tough, Southern broad. And I never write stereotypical gay characters. For decades, gay caricitures in horror films have been set up as the brunt of easy jokes, or as someone that the male lead can recoil from in order to assert his straightness. So, I’m mindful of that.

9) What are your goals/aspirations?

A) My current goals are to set up the TV series and direct my first feature. But in the long run, I would love to be in a position where I can produce and finance films. I’ve seen too many great scripts go unmade…or worse, get turned in to crappy movies.

10) What one piece of advice would you give to aspiring screenwriters and/or filmmakers?

A) The thing I constantly tell writers is do is write. It sounds obvious, but that’s the one thing you have control over. It’s also the only way to grow as artists. All my stuff isn’t gold…but over the years, I have evolved and hopefully gotten better with each script. And one last piece of advice, which applies to writers and filmmakers, is to try and finance your projects independently. The independent route is the best chance you’ll have to see your script, or film, get made right. Studios will market test and second guess the script…changing it at the whim of a director, producer, actor or test group. With all of the advances in digital, it’s gotten affordable to make your own film. That way you can have a product you’re proud of and a calling card to get more work.

Genius is Next to Insanity

So a few nights ago my friend Tony Sago invited me to an advanced screening of Sherlock Holmes with a Q&A afterwards with Robert Downey Jr. This is one of the many "perks" of living in LA and working in the film industry. But as a writer it is also extremely advantageous because it allowed me a small glimpse at an actor, who I believe to be an utter genius on screen.

Now that is a huge statement to make and I know that there are people who will both agree and disagree with me but, to me, it really is hard to deny his talent. Just for the record, I'm a huge Sherlock Holmes fan. My mother introduced me to the stories when I was kid. I'm actually half way through the second book of collected stories (which I highly recommend to anyone who hasn't read them.)

I found the movie amazing. I really did. It was funny, clever, well performed, and beautifully shot. It is one of my favorite films thus far for 2009. However, afterwards, was where the real inspiration for me happened: the interview with Robert Downy Jr. Now, I won't say that it was life altering or anything like that. But I did find it inspiring in many ways. None of us are strangers to his past. His drug and alcohol abuse, the arrests. It was hard to see someone we loved on screen for so many years fall so low. But he did the unthinkable...he recovered, became sober, and began acting again and came back with such force. It was like he needed that period of his life to regain confidance or, perhaps, a better perspective on life.

Listening to Robert talk the other night was one of the few moments in life that I will always treasure. He was very witty, charming, and most engaging. He literally took over the interview with fun stories and quips of being on the set while filming the movie, what it took to prepare, how he got the role. There is no doubt that Robert Downey, Jr is zany in real life. It may possibly explain why is presence on screen is so larger than life. And I've just often wondered if Genius is next to insanity.

I suppose that could be so. I mean, look at the late Michael Jackson. He was in scandal after scandal after scandal. Near the end it seemed as if he had become just a caricature of himself. He lived an extravagant life; living in a mansion that he had turned into an amusement park. Strange as it was, we as fans were always intrigued by the way he lived his life. It was, dare I say, almost surreal. But his music, it seemed to speak to so many across the globe. There isn't a Michael Jackson song that no one doesn't know. He was an icon who had reason beyond the stratosphere when he died.

I suppose that you can still be extremely creative as an artist and NOT have to be insane. In fact, I know that you can. But I wonder if there is a fine line between the two and I wonder just exactly how they both truly affect one another.

May '09: Daniel Frank

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SgsCdjNgEzI/AAAAAAAAAJU/hQAY5RJogbU/s200/n13900586_49233406_670.jpg.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335360890241815346" />

1) What is the biggest challenge facing writers/bloggers today?
I have talked to a few people regarding their blogs and how they got them started. I would say if you are just getting started writing/blogging the biggest challenge is finding your voice. Your voice is that one hook or angle that makes your writing different and unique.

2) What has been one of your biggest challenges?
My blog is about my experiences in the entertainment industry. Often I have found myself attending the same event every month. When I choose to cover an event multiple times, I find one of the biggest challenges is finding a way to make the repeated event interesting without repeating the same experiences each time. Another challenge is actually being able to go to those events; let's face it, blogging doesn't exactly pay well and living in Orange County instead of LA doesn't too much either.

3) Where do you find your inspiration to write?
This is a somewhat difficult question as my blog is about my experiences in the entertainment industry, usually the stories write themselves. For other things I have written or help create, I find inspiration in isolation or dreams; basically any activity which allows my mind to wander.

4) What current projects are you working on?
In addition to my blog, Hollywood Nobody, I am currently writing two screen plays. Both deal with the same concept or belief of soul mates, but each deals with this idea in different ways. Another project I am working on is tentatively called, "Elementals" which is about a group of genetically altered GAY superheroes; perhaps you know my partner on this project, his name is Michael Coulombe? Currently this project is still in development. In addition to writing, I am also passionate about acting. I can currently be seen in Nick Wauters short film, "Neurotica," which is not a porno. If you go to LOGO Online you can currently watch "Neurotica" as part of the CLICK LIST - BEST IN SHORT PROGRAM. Another project I worked on as an actor, which has recently been released is the Henri Charr feature, "The Border." Unfortunately my footage was cut from the film, but I had an amazing experience working on that film. The third project I can be seen in is the upcoming directorial debut of Chris Fishel, "Chronicles of a Lonely Mind." In addition to those three films, I will begin work on a fourth film, "The Purpose of Apples," shortly.

5) What is the best benefit of journaling in a blog?
I think the appropriate answer would be the ability to look back on an amazing journey and see how I have grown as an artist and individual, but that's kind of a bullshit answer. For me the best benefit is hearing from the readers that they enjoyed what I wrote. Nothing gives me a bigger high then to know that someone enjoys what I am doing. It nice to know that I am doing this for the amusement of other people and not just to fulfill some innate narcissism

6) Have your tried writing anything else?
Yes I have tried writing poems, and song lyrics, but found that I am not that great at writing those. Again that goes back to finding your voice. I also have been working on a few screen plays, but those take forever to write so it's hard for me to remain focused on it for too long...ooo something shiny!!!

7) What is your ideal writing sanctuary?
Normally I do a lot of writing in my bedroom sitting in an uncomfortable office chair with an armrest that continuously pinches my arm because it is slowly falling apart. Other than that I like to go to The Library in Long Beach. It reminds me of the Gay and/or trendy coffee houses back home in Minneapolis; Vera's, Uncommon Grounds, and Café Weird (God rest her soul). By the way I fully expect free drinks from each of those places for the plug.

8)Do you think that being openly gay affects your writing?
Definitely, but not necessarily in a negative way. Being gay myself, I have found that those are the stories that I am interested in hearing, seeing, and writing. I have recently begun to create an idea for a screen play that features a heterosexual lead; however, it's a female with a gay best friend. Hey you know what they say, "write what you know."

9) What are your goals/aspirations?
My current passion is mostly in acting; however my biggest goal, regardless of the medium I use to accomplish it, is to be a positive role model for LGBT people across the nation. I know that's a tall order, but I believe it is an important goal to have. The more positive role models our community has the more we will ourselves accepted for who we truly are. I am tired of reading in the newspaper (or more appropriately on Facebook and The Smoking Cocktail) about 11 year old boys killing themselves because their classmates made them feel like they were worthless and had no other options; there are always other options.

10) How does being an actor affect your writing?
In terms of my blog, if I wasn't for my experience as an actor, the blog itself wouldn't exist. Or it would be about something else. Most likely me being bitchy about random meaningless things. Lets be honest, bitchy is my thing. In terms of writing or creating screen plays, If I am working on an incredibly difficult scene and am struggling with dialogue, I have found that the ability to imagine myself in that scene and/or act it out can help me create better dialogue or even take the scene in a completely different direction then I had previously imagined

Daniel Frank

Poor Man Copyright

So I am struck with brilliance and I sit down to compose my masterpiece to paper (or sometimes to my computer). So, I put the newly written piece into an envelope and I mail it to myself so if I ever to dispute it being stolen I have a dated piece of material dated by a Federal institution: the post office!

Well that is no longer the case. It works a lot like inspiration in that way. On April 11, 2009 Susan Boyle stepped onto the stage of the UK hit show "Britians Got Talent." She is a plain, unassuming woman who is nearly 48 years old. She is unemployed and, as she says when they talked to her, a woman who has never been kissed. She is the kind of woman that people snicker at, evidenced by the audiences reaction to her as she stood there introducing herself.

She started singing at the age of 12 and it was her life long ambition to sing to a live crowd and on April 11, 2009 she finally had her chance. She walked out there, nervous and with a cheeky grin and told the audience "I'll be singing 'I Dreamed a Dream' from Les Miserables." The audience was ready to hear warbling half hit notes and the crooning of a woman who had only convinced herself she had talent. What she did though was to win over an entire nation in less than four minutes.

She is endearing, to say the least. I admire anyone who never gives up on their dream. She knew she had nothing to lose and decided, even at the age of 47, to risk everything and give it a chance. To me, that's inspiration. To me, that's a true artist. If anything, we can learn that if you 'dream a dream' then it's never too late to reach for the stars!

Here she is:

Susan Boyle

Star Wars (John Williams is the Man)

One thing I've learned about spending a lot of time writing is that sometimes you have to stop and take a break. After earning a degree in
Creative Writing at the University of South Florida, his début poetry collection, Your
Dead Body is My Welcome Mat, was published in 2001. Since then, Reigns has published
two chapbooks, Ignited and Cartography, and taught creative writing workshops around
the country to gay youth and people living with HIV. For three years, Reigns served as
Literary Director for Tampa’s GLBT community center. Currently he is working on
S(t)even Years, a 7-year endurance performance under the mentorship of performance
artist Linda Montano and is also at work on a new collection of poetry entitled
Inheritance. He recently edited My Life is Poetry, an anthology of autobiographical poetry by GLB seniors. www.stevenreigns.com

1) What is the biggest challenge facing writers/poets today?

I think creative people’s challenges have been similar for decades, if not centuries, we wrestle with creating precisely what we envision and feel, we’re in constant exploration and observation of our inner and outer worlds. What’s unique to our time is the changing culture of print and its competition for our attention. Writing poetry, sans a small few, isn’t a viable means for sole income.

As far as the future of poetry, I’m not a fatalist. I embrace technology and feel that we’re in an exciting time. Fifteen years ago we lamented on the dying art of letter writing. It would have been impossible to imagine what we have today—email. I realize it isn’t the same thing but if we embrace the change it’s easier to recognize that more people are expressing themselves with the written word than twenty years ago. I’m confident poetry will have a similar fate. Just last week I was scouring the net and downloading poets into my iPod. Technology or some type of cultural shift is going to give poetry new life. In many ways, I think poetry, with its brevity, has the potential to become favored over novels.

2) What has been one of your biggest challenges?

The first is finding time. I don’t think this challenge is unique to me. I’m so engaged in life and find so many things of interest that it can sometimes be easy to neglect my writing time. The books on my shelf and the blank page have lots of attention competition and don’t seem to cry from neglect.
I’m also not immune to self-doubt. There are times I question the importance of what I’m doing. I even get into the comparing game and think of all of the talented poets out there vying for the same space in journals, publisher’s printing presses, and bookshelves. About two years ago I was flying out of NYC and kept staring out the window. I was like a kid again and awed at how many people were out in the world. My thought wasn’t “There are so many people, I should stop being one.” I felt excited to be on the planet, able to join-in and witness life. I soon began to think similarly about my poetry—I’m joining a pantheon, not battling in the coliseum. There is enough room for all of our voices.

3) Where do you find your inspiration to write?

I think anything can serve as an inspiration to write, we just need to allow ourselves the time to do it. Linda Montano wrote that everyone has a chicken story. The first time I read that, I thought it was ridiculous. Then, when I gave myself time, I realized I had one too.
As a poet, I gather what is around me and inside of me and put it into my work.
Generally to write a poem I like to have two ideas or two sources of inspiration. Sometimes one element doesn’t seem to be enough to sustain a poem. As an example, smells can quickly take me back to a time and place. Smelling the perfume soap my grandmother used could be a poem but I like poetry to be a bit more complex than that. I’d couple that poem with a story about sitting in her beauty parlor or relate the aromatic reminder to my first boyfriend’s cologne.
Inspiration for writing has changed over the years. Good writing inspires me. I’ll read a good poem and get excited thinking how I want to write something as good. I don’t think of this as competiveness, I think of it as almost a conversation. I want to be in that kitchen, cooking with those chiefs.

4) What current projects are you working on?

The biggest “project” I’m working on isn’t directly poetry related. In December I will graduate with a Masters in Family Therapy. When starting the program I wrote supportively in my journal “You’re not leaving poetry behind, you’re leaving poverty behind.” I was tempted to get an MFA but I was unsure about my interest in teaching in academia.
As a poet, one needs to find a way to support themselves; poetry isn’t going to be enough. My course of study, psychology, focuses on the personal and relationships. My poetry has had the same scope. Shortly after starting the program I read the Sigmund Freud quote, “Everywhere I go I find that a poet has been there before me.” Anne Sexton has a poem about the similarities between the professions, “Said the Poet to the Analyst.” If I desired I could even specialize in the emerging Poetry Therapy field. The deeper I get into it, the more surprising the similarities.

5) Do you mostly write in free verse?
I have quite a few poems that are forms but I’m a fan of the narrative block.
I think one of the dangers of form poetry is that the message or meaning gets distorted because the poet tries to push a story or experience into a container that might not be appropriate. It’s important to know what container fits best for ones story. There isn’t a one-size/one form fits all proportion. That’s why it’s important to know forms and what works best within them. In my classes we avoid all end rhyme. It usually makes a poem sound like a nursery book.

6) What else do you write besides poetry?

For three years I had a bi-monthly column in a magazine. I’ve occasionally written book reviews and conducted interviews. Primarily I write poetry. Right now I don’t have an interest in anything else. This is a rarity in Los Angeles where there are so many aspiring screenwriters. I went on a date with a guy who was amazed I only had interest in writing poetry. He thought it lacked ambition and asked annoyingly, “Don’t you ever want to do anything bigger than that?” I told him that poetry is big, it’s the biggest thing in my life and I never tire of it.

7) What is your ideal writing sanctuary?

I’ve long given up the idea of a writing sanctuary. Focusing on the perfect one or how I don’t have one seems like a good excuse to procrastinate or a good reason why I’m not writing. Ideally, I’d write down a poem when the idea comes to me. This isn’t always the case, I’d be a more prolific writer if I were as open to ideas as I was in the past. I was forever pulling my car over and jotting down ideas, stopping mid-shower to write a verse. I still keep a notebook near my bed but the urgency to write down every idea isn’t as strong. Maybe my feelings of needing to immediately write the thought came from some type of starvation thinking. I’m more comfortable with myself as a creative person, I know my output is endless. I believe the strong images will be waiting when I’m ready to write. The challenge currently is setting aside the time to write.

8)Do you think that being openly gay affects your writing?

My flippant answer to this question is that everything affects my writings. However, I know it’s more complex. Such questions are common during queer writing panels and at conferences. What makes a work gay? What is a gay sensibility? I took a weekly pottery class for four years. One night I was looking at a shelf filled with my work, the only gay male, and that of my classmates. I’m not so sure potters talk about the gay sensibility of their work or if their gayness affects their work, they just make it. The same is true for my poetry. I don’t feel the need to represent my community when I write. If I did, I’d be paralyzed with pressure. I’m focused on representing my experience or vision—that’s pressure enough. I hope readers can relate, learn, and empathize with the work but I don’t sit down with an audience in mind.
Gayness and being a writer has always been intricately linked for me. When I first had sex with a guy at age sixteen, I wrote about it in my journal. Later while reading that entry to my friend Stephanie Recht, she encouraged me to write more and I followed that advice.

9) What s your next project?

On April 15th, I’m teaching a free autobiographical poetry workshop at The West Hollywood Library at 6:00 PM that is co-sponsored by Friends of the West Hollywood Library. On April 27, I will perform at Queer Mondays at Highways Performance Space at 7:30 PM. I enjoy teaching poetry workshops and connecting people with the joy of writing poetry and finding a creative outlet. I still teach the monthly autobiographical poetry workshop My Life is Poetry for GLBT elders.
I have a finished collection, Inheritance, which I’m submitting to presses. I’m three years into my seven-year performance piece S(t)even Years. Each year I focus and move my way up to each chakra of the body. There’s a chapbook for each year but these have very small runs and are limited editions.

10) As of right now, what are you most proud of with your writing?

I’m always the most proud of my latest accomplishments. Most of my work is autobiographical and the writings are documents of that time. I think I’ve become a better writer but also a more astute observer and a healthier person. My new work reflects that. The honesty and integrity of my work hasn’t wavered but the pacing, rawness, and immediacy have changed. I’m quite happy with where I am and the direction of my poetry. I look forward to observing where poetry takes me and where I take the poetry.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 138px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/Sd6UBJcZEBI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/qzaj2jEXC3M/s200/book_cartography.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322854557034287122" />

The Purpose of Apples

So I held auditions for my short film "The Purpose of Apples." For instance, my good friend Andrew is having a moment of what he calls "actor's block." It's sort of like writer's block but only for actors. He's a phenomenal actor but, just like rest of us, had an off day. He had an audtion this afternoon for a play called Carved in Stone. We went to go see the reading last weekend and really enjoyed it. He'd really be perfect as one of the lead roles. He knows, I know it. But he went in for the audition today to be an understudy and just didn't do well. It happens. It doesn't make him a bad actor; it just makes him an artist.

This is something I have to remind myself constantly of when it comes to my writing. It seems for every good thing that will happen that pushes my career forward it always seems there are three things after that drag it backwards.

The one thing I'd like to remind all artists is that there will always be lows for every artist. Even the established ones. It's about remaining positive, keeping faith, and never giving up. I struggle with that myself almost daily. But my love of writing always, always surpasses my desire to just throw in the towel!

"You Can Call Me Eve" Play Reading

Two weeks from today is the reading of my first full length play "You Can Call Me Eve." The story of a latina woman who changes her identity to help deal the pain of her past.

When: Monday, February 23, 2009
7:30pm

Where: Write Act Repertory
6128 Yucca St
Hollywood, Ca
       www.writeactrep.org

Update:

The play reading was such a success. I truly want to thank Wil Bowers</a for believing in my little play that could.

Everyone who was there gave amazing feedback. They all seemed genuinely touched by the words. The actors themselves brought so much to the reading as well. People were laughing and crying...it was moving. And sitting there listening to everyone and seeing the looks on their faces made it all worth it.

A few days later Wil told me the Sr. member of the Write Act Repertory said the feedback from the audience, and the actors, and the director was good so they'd like to produce it! So, now I need to take the feedback from the reading and sit down and make the necessary albeit important changes to the play. This is, of course, a great thing. I've waited four (4) years even for this step.

So thank you to my actors:

Eve: Liliana Montenegro
Rosa: Lucia Solares
Danny: Vance Roi Reyes
Carlos: Cameron Bender
Maria: Melanie Cruz
Erik: Tim Bell
Narrator/Danny (14): Casey Dickerson

Thank you

February 09: Bazhe

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 195px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SYZMuMfp4GI/AAAAAAAAAHM/7sX0H7G4Z3g/s200/3402.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298006368159653986" />

1) What is the biggest challenge facing writers today?
The readership that is shrinking as the global warming is expending.
The greedy publishers that want only commercial books to sell like soap.
The need of books that readers can read without using their brains.
Simply, the need of books that won't make the readers smarter, yet dumber.

2) Where do you find your inspiration to write?
Everywhere I go I can get inspired easily. I travel a lot and that helps.
I just absorb any details of any place, or of a situation I am in.

3) What current projects are you working on?
I am finishing one fiction book, and one art book.

4) Who are some of your favorite authors?
Many. Currently I read and study: G. Orwell and A. Huxley.

5) What's your favorite genre/medium to write in?
I like to experiment with different genre as I create new work.
I think writing the same way all the time is dull.

6) What is your ideal writing sanctuary?
In a train that goes somewhere, or in my basement.

7) English isn't your first language. How is growing up in Yugoslavia affected your view on the world? How has it affected your writing?
Knowing more than one language can only complement my writing abilities.
I am glad that I am able to use my knowledge of different human systems.
This only enriches my writing, and makes it more powerful.

8) What s your next project?
The book that I am finishing is a Americana-fiction-book.
It deals with the all timely problems that we are facing now.

It deals with: the financial and the healthcare crisis;
the banksters bankrupting America; and
the collapsing of the auto industry.

I write about the heads of these institutions begging for money
and at the same time screwing the American people royally.

It is a satire about the manipulations done by the elite groups
and the people begging God for help.

9) As of right now, what are you most proud of with your writing?
The all great feedback that I received from the readers.
This motivate me to write more and better.

Bazhe

<img style="cursor:pointer; And better.

2) Where do you find your inspiration to write?
I find my inspiration in my life experiences or fantasies I could never act out other than on paper. There will always be some of my reality in everything I do. I think that's true for most writers.

3) What current projects are you working on?
Right now I am in pre production on a film I wrote called "Zombie King". Michael Norman Mann helped me on the screenplay. It's a post rapture party story of a lonely little zombie trying to hold on to her humanity while going on a 'Wizard of Oz' type journey to find the Zombie King who can 'cure' her.

4) Who are some of your favorite writers?
I love Stephen King. Love, Love, Love him. If I were a man, I would be Stephen King.

5) What's your favorite genre/medium to write in?
I tend to gravatate towards Erotic Horror. My writings have always been dark and pretty graphic. I've had to edit them significantly to fit an outline or treatment.
Now if you are talking about what do I like to use to write with. I have my note pads, shiny pens and pencils. I have tons of notes on scenes or characters, or general outlines. Only when I have somewhat of a complete item, will I use electronics.

6) What is your ideal writing sanctuary?
In my bedroom, or on BART. Love BART for writing. Much fodder for the mind.

7) How has working in cable influenced your writing?
Writing for television is much different than writing for the silver screen or a publication, or even a webzine for that matter. It requires a different skill set, or, rather, the force of you developing one fast! You have to be able to divorce yourself from your 'baby' it is not yours and they will tell you when they want it changed. They always want it changed.

8) As of right now, what are you most proud of with your writing?
Two peices pop into my mind: an horror erotic short titled "Sam Knew Better", it was published in a San Francisco underground magazine last year; and the "Zombie King" script. Those two I am very proud of.

These UnUnites States

My oldest nephew sometimes likes to sit with a journal and compose his thoughts...he read this to me on Christmas Day. I tried to skirt snobbish editors and money-grubbing publishers by self-publishing Chicago Love Tapestry. I still had creative differences with them, however, because they wanted a dollar to correct THEIR mistakes! My colleagues at Genre expressed shock at sweet ole Erik chewing nails and spitting battleships with my publisher. I will never use them again and have told them so several times.

2) Where do you find your inspiration to write?
I am inspired by personal pain. That's why I prefer writing comedy--or dramedy: laughing makes me feel evuh so much bettuh. My son told the play audience he believes I should write drama, however, because he knows I can.

3) What current projects are you working on?
I am researching and writing a Civil War novel, Devour the Widow's House, the reason I moved to northern Virginia four years ago. It's about a German-American farming family in the Shenandoah Valley during Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign of 1862. It's about disinheritance and ostracism by one's family and by one's government. It's all caused by forbidden love between a planter's daughter and a German farmer, and between two closeted rebel soldiers loved by a discerning belle trying to choose between them. All of them detest the federal government which has displaced them.

4) Who are some of your favorite authors?
I have an eclectic choice in writers. I particularly love the nineteenth century American Romantic era: Mark Twain and Louisa May Alcott and Harriett Beecher Stowe. Dickens is a favorite. My favorite popular novelists are my cousin Gore Vidal, Frank G. Slaughter, MD, and Herman Wouk. David McCullough and Stephen Ambrose are top history writers. I can chow down on Carson McCullers and Flannery O'Connor.

5) What's your favorite genre/medium to write in?
My favorite genre is comedy. Plays are fun to write for the dialogue. Woody Allen and Neil Simon are two of my influences. You can still pack in serious themes via sudden pensive, wistful monologues, like a piece of noisy classical music winding down, before cranking it up again with the fun. The comedy must go on!

6) What is your ideal writing sanctuary?
My ideal writing sanctuary is the bungalow I rented atop a cavern at the northern terminus of Virginia's Skyline Drive. There, I completed Tapestry and began the play within a play for the sequel. What a view: the mountains, the river, the wildlife! The drinking water was from the cavern below me and had so much calcium, it eroded the hot water element at least once a month! My cabin was well-stocked with replacement elements.

7) What s your next project?
My next project is a Tapestry sequel, The Merry Dancers, title derived from the Scottish Highlanders' term for the Northern Lights. Michael's play is performed in song and dance at the Shubert in New Haven, and the minor characters in Tapestry are featured.

8) As of right now, what are you most proud of with your writing?
I'm most proud of a surprise phone call Friday from my publisher, who said they'd gotten a good response from my book appearance at the recent Frankfurt International Book Fair. People! I am here today –
before you –
as a symbol of a new beginning that is about to take place.
We are on the threshold of a new era,
an era free from the destruction of obscenity;
the infestation of affectivity.
At the forefront of this populace
I shall begin the absolution to freedom.”
And Hate smiled.
And the people cheered
for they had a leader who was brave.

Then there was a dark cloud that loomed above - -
fat and swollen with rain - -
but the people didn’t care
for rain was good
it fed the ground,
which nourished life
so it mattered none that it was murky mysterious rain.

And the rain fell,
and Hate smiled,
and the people cheered
for they had a leader who provided for the people.

Then a might wind rose
and carried with it the spirit of transformation,
the embodiment of change.
The wind was good because it brought change –
change was good because it is fundamental
so it mattered none that the wind eroded the land
that the rain had cultivated.

And the wind blew,
and the rain fell,
and Hate smiled,
and the people cheered
for they had a leader who pioneered growth.

Then the land trembled
and it shook with the force of a thousand secrets never revealed
and the rumbling of truth that none believed.
But it was good because it carried the knowledge of the beginning of time,
so it mattered none that time tumbled away under the roar of the soil.

And the Earth shook,
and the wind blew,
and the rain fell,
and Hate smiled,
and the people cheered
for they had a leader who promoted the sovereignty of faith.

And Hate stood motionless at the pulpit.
The crowd trampled over one another
for a glimpse of His auspicious demeanor,
that flicker of something almost sinister in His eye,
which they knew meant that He was a man of great power.

And Hate smiled
and the people cheered
for they had a leader who would lead them through a revolution –
and the Earth shook,
and the wind blew,
and the rain fell,
and Hate smiled;
but the people
the people quailed from this future
for it was different
it was unfamiliar.
And Hate stepped away from the platform
as the onlookers stared up in awe.
The silence echoed through the heart of each spectator.
This was, indeed, the commencement of a new instigation of life.

Written by: Michael Coulombe
What is the most challenging thing facing writers today? Especially a comedian?
New material that’s original and where you can’t see the joke coming. I work at that all the time.

2. Where do you find your inspiration to write?
My Family who is insane! My every day life and Sarah Palin! You know I can see her house from my terrace, so I guess I'm ready to be governor of ALASKA. If I can see the moon does that make me an astronaut!

3. What current projects are you working on?
My DVD of my stand up special JASON STUART: MAKING IT TO THE MIDDLE comes out November 18th and you can get it http://www.ariztical.com/filmsAZ/jason_stuart.html
shameless plug

4. Who are your biggest influences?
Scott Thompson, Sandra Bernhardt, Joan Rivers, Louie Anderson, Richard Lewis, Lily Tomlin, Don Rickles and so many gay folks who came before me and who opened the path like Kate Clinton and Harvey Fierstein,

5. In your opinion, what makes your comedy different from others?
I'm not really masc. or fem.. I'm not the best at anything...I'm like Cher!

6. What is your ideal writing sanctuary?
When the joke works and it comes easy the audience loves it!

7. Do you feel that being an actor influences your writing?
I am great at improv. I have used that skill when I was on MY WIFE & KIDS, my film 10 ATTITUDES, A DAY WITHOUT A MEXICAN , FAT ACTRESS and so many more. Its really helped me make my work come alive.

8. As of right now, what are you most proud of with your career?
That I am still here and able to make a living. Also that I got out of bed this morning and my face didn't drop

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SQDRXPxA5mI/AAAAAAAAAFc/YIikNDzCEL0/s200/MAKING+MIDDLE+ALT.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260434562068047458" />

Conversation with a Teenager

A conversation with my 14 year old nephew yesterday sparked some inspiration within me.

We were driving in my car on the way back from the store and he asked me why Proposition 8 was a big deal. My reply: It's not just about gay marriage, it's about the idea that people want to write discrimination into the state constitution. He asked me, "is that even possible?"

I said, "unfortunately, it is." His reply: "that doesn't seem fair"

I'm a little taken back by the fact that my 14 year old nephew gets it but that there are hundreds of thousands in California who don't. They are afraid that this issue will affect our children...well guess what, it has. Now, I have to sit down and explain to my nephew why the religious people of California want to write discrimination into our Constitution. I have to make him understand that there are people who feel they need to "minister" to us about love while they go behind our backs and preach hate. The problem is, I don't know how to do that!

"But wasn't this country founded on religion?" he asks me. I tell him, "the way people act nowadays you would think it was, but it wasn't. Our forefathers came to this country because they didn't feel it was right for a country to force religion on their people, so they came here to North America to make a better life."

"So, then why do they force it upon us now?" he asked innocently.

"That's why this proposition is so controversial." I exclaimed. "People have forgotten what this country was founded on."

I know people say that they fear what will happen to this country if gays marry. That's the least of my worries. My biggest fear is: how can we raise our children in a society that promotes fear and discrimination? This is seriously gone from a concern of gay marriage to an act of civil rights. And I seriously thought in the year 2008 we were farther along and better than that as a country. But I had to explain to my nephew, on the way back from the store, that I was wrong.

I helped raise my two eldest nephews. The only lessons I wanted them to learn was that life is too short for hate and that you should never give up on your dreams. I fear that on the morning of November 5, 2008 the oldest will wake up to a world of second class citizens and will turn to me again and ask why. He learned in school the hardships that the African American community had to endure in the 60s when they fought for THEIR freedom. He was even taught how wrong it was that they were treated differently.

I love my nephews...they are like sons to me. I want to create a world that they can be proud to live in. I just have to pray that the rest of the people around us have the courage to do the right thing.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 82px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SQZLCk9tydI/AAAAAAAAAGk/XZ547Ny1vXg/s200/vote-no-red.jpg.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5261975722283354578" />

Inspiration at Ground Zero

This blog is about inspiration. Where it comes from...where writers find it. It's elusive at best; sought after constantly. Where do writers get it from? It's the one question I ask whenever I meet a new writer. Each writer is different and therefore they find inspiration in so many different ways.

When I'm asked what inspires me the only answer i give is: life. I am inspired by life! It's the most simple answer I can think of. I'm a people watcher. I'm always intrigued as to how people behave in public vs. how they differ in their private homes. I sit at the airport, or the mall, or while I'm at lunch and watch how people relate to each other or those around them. Each person has a story and, as a writer, sometimes I find myself filling in the blanks on their life.

Writing is often more or less a fictionalized version of how we interpret life. So I try to note everything around me.

One of my biggest inspirations thus far is my recent trip to New York City. The last time I visited I was 9. I don't remember too much about the trip, however. So I started this trip with a new fresh perspective.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 189px; height: 51px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SQE3KrUWZ_I/AAAAAAAAAF0/upyAJqUmQo8/s200/logo_iloveny.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260546496311748594" />

I came to New York wit 6140 Productions to make a movie called The Four Faced Liar. We filmed for six days and I've had the last three days to myself to enjoy the city. This is where my true inspiration began. Although, we filmed at 4am in the West Village, I learned then exactly what the night life in New York is really like. That was quite a shock to this LA boy who always though bars closed at 2am.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SQE5qili6oI/AAAAAAAAAGM/xZeFf41vZYk/s200/DSCN0321.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260549242747021954" />

But I found the night life inspiring. The people that were attracted to it. The way the buildings were lit. How they towered over everything, protecting it against the world. They're almost celestial bodies at night! I realized early on how New York is it's own character. There is something magical and surreal about the city. It's almost familiar even if, like me, it's your first time.

I walked around Times Square, around Broadway, around Chelsea, West Village and met my favorite actress and friend in Astor Place. Everywhere you go there is a small piece of history or architect that demands a tiny portion of your attention. It's splendidly marvelous.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SQE4tjkmTWI/AAAAAAAAAGE/goYF7vNyuPc/s200/DSCN0478.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260548195039464802" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SQE4s7mRtfI/AAAAAAAAAF8/rdL_blbXHm8/s200/DSCN0476.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260548184309085682" />

Today, though, I have tickets to see my first broadway musical on broadway! Spring Awakening this evening at 7pm. (And theatre is a great inspiration!) However, this afternoon I took the liberty of taking the 6 train down to the World Trade Center. I got off the train and walked the three blocks to where these majestic buildings used to stand. Amongst the towering buildings still standing, there is a great hole when you look up. It's almost as if their shadow still rests there. It's humbling. To stand there and see the great emptiness and know, wonder even, what it must've been like to stand there in that same spot seven years previous and watch the towers, ablaze, full of concern, and fear, for the uncertainty. It's a fear I hope we no longer have to experience.

I made my way into the gift shop where I bought a few trinkets; my most treasured being a small metal bracelet I bought. They come wrapped in a small blue gift bag. They are randomly given to you and each one is embossed with a name of a victim from 9/11. I took my little blue bag and walked across the street to St. Peter's Parish. It once used to stand in the shadows of the towers but when they fell it became a relief center for so many including volunteers and fire fighters. I walked the grounds, saw the old headstones from the 1800's and stood in front of the little memorials inside the church honoring the victims of 9/11. I couldn't help but cry. I remembered eight years ago walking down the streets of LA holding a candle in memorium of these same people.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SQE62a6jBBI/AAAAAAAAAGc/KodVe-V4PNY/s200/DSCN0492.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260550546357683218" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SQE613czLLI/AAAAAAAAAGU/zqMGKH3WaG4/s200/DSCN0481.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260550536837672114" />

I slowly made my way back to the front sitting on a bench under the trees. I sat there in silence. The church so tall and strong out in front of me. I reached into my pocket and pulled out the little blue bag, where my metal bracelet wait inside. I pulled open the draw string and out came my bracelet: Jerrold Paskins, died 9-11-01 at the World Trade Center. My eyes swelled with tears as I held the bracelet, saying a silent prayer for him..and for his family who, to this day, probably mourn the loss of him.

I put the bracelet on, put the blue bag in my pocket and and stood up from the bench. Just like the rest of New York, I too needed to get up and move on. The new building is in the process of being erected. It will always stand for a beacon of hope for a city of so many people.

Elementals: A Brief Synopsis

"Elementals"
(Working Title)
By Michael Coulombe and Daniel Frank

"Elementals" takes place in present day Chicago. Kinetic Labs, a powerful and corrupt chemical manufacturing plant, sits nearby keeping an ever watchful eye on the citizens of Chicago.

Greg Kucowski, Tristan Bloom, Parker Howell, and Bryce Mackenzie met while growing up in a Chicago foster home. Life before entering foster care was no walk in the park. Each of them harbored a similar secret that not only put those closest to them in danger, but also kept them constantly on the run from those who meant them harm.

The foster home they each lived in acted as a sanctuary providing stability and safety. No longer being chased and no longer having to run from their unknown assailants, they all bonded and became family; confiding in each other their deepest secret. So, it is my pleasure to introduce David Dean Bottrell

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SOUJZjemv8I/AAAAAAAAAEI/VfL5n9DFYYU/s200/DAVID+DEAN+BOTTRELL-+cropped2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252614875022540738" />

1. What is the most challenging thing facing writers today?
I don't think the plight of writers has really changed that much over time. The question is what to write and what form to write it in. You have stay in tuned in to the world around you. Writing is always a response to lives we are all collectively living.

2. Where do you find your inspiration to write?
Funny, but I don't put much stock in inspiration anymore. It's great to feel excited about what you're writing, but unfortunately that feeling can evaporate in a milisecond. The greatest trick I ever learned was to keep writing after that initial excitement disappears. I try to trust my imagination as much as possible. I try to be ready to act on ideas that excite me. I also have to trust that something that I find engaging, funny or interesting will find an audience. Writing isn't for everybody. It's hard to start. It's hard to continue. It's hard to finish. I guess that sounds a little grim, but there's a strange reward that comes along with writing that's hard to describe. It somehow makes you want to try again.

3. What current projects are you working on?
I'm writing my first ever TV pilot. It's exciting and scary. Although I've acted on TV, I've never written for it. All my screenwriting experience has been for films which is a very different beast. At least I'm learning something new. I always like that. I just finished writing a book proposal based on my blog and there seems to be some interest in it. So that's exciting.

4. Who are some of your favorite writers?
There are so many. In the screenwriting world -- William Goldman, Scott Frank, Steve Zallian, Alan Ball, Charlie Kaufman, Pedro Almodóvar, Larry McMurty, Billy Wilder and Horton Foote. When it comes to fiction, I'm always amazed by writers who can bridge genres -- Especially those who can weave fantastical elements into their stories. I wish I had the breadth of imagination to pull that off.

5. What's your favorite genre and/or medium to write in?
I guess I'd have to say screenwriting since it's the medium that I have the most experience in. It's challenging and incredibly difficult. There are so many rules and you have to corral all your big ideas and distill them down until they can pass throught the eye of a needle. When I started writing my blog I was thrilled to have a place to stretch out a little as a writer. It's great to have a forum to tell all my show business stories. God knows I've got enough of them. I'm so excited that the blog has found an audience.

6. What is your ideal writing sanctuary?
I'm not sure I have one. I used to be intensely private and needed a lot of solitude to get anything done. But these days, I'm fairly flexible. Last summer, I wrote an entire screenplay in a local coffee shop and it was a terrific experience. I do what I can to make writing fun. If I'm feeling giddy, I might camp out in some joint with cool music and a lot of human traffic. If I'm feeling vulnerable, I'm more likely to take refuge in my home office. Someday, I'd like to go rent a cottage somewhere and write in some gorgeous, bucolic location. Hasn't happened yet, but maybe someday.

7. Do you feel that being an actor influences your writing?
Absolutely. By the time I started writing, I'd already been a working actor for over 11 years. My early scripts were technically a mess but all that performing had definitely given me a voice as a writer. It still helps me a lot with dialogue. All I have to do is read a scene out loud and I usually get a sense if it will work.

8. As of right now, what are you most proud of with your writing?
I adapted a book last year called "How to Cook Your Daughter." It's memoir by Jessica Hendra about her very troubled relationship with her father who molested her when she was a kid. When it was first sent to me, I thought it was too dark to succeed on screen. And then I had a small brainstorm about how the story could be told. Fortunately, Jessica was willing to let me take her book, put it in a blender and reinvent it while keeping the essential truth of her story in tact. The resulting final script is probably the best thing I've ever written. I'm hugely proud of it. It's out to talent right now, so hopes are running high. I guess when I boil it down, I'm most proud that I'm still a writer after all these years. I'm grateful that it has continued to evolve and grow. It still fits me.

You can check him out here at: www.partsandlabor.tv

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SOUJvda0ttI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/7Xh8zoXd-YE/s200/lincolndisguise.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252615251353188050" />
David as Lincoln Meyer on the set of Boston Legal

A fun filled day

So today was a wonderfully fun filled day. This morning I went to my friend Darcey Stubblefield's house to record an audio track for my children's story "Squeak the Mouse." Darcey is the lead singer of the band Blind Ruby. (CD available on cdbaby.com.) That was a lot of fun. I hadn't been in a studio for awhile so it was a good feeling to be back in front of the mic, with the headphones on. And then while we were recording the track for Squeak the Mouse, Nancy Villere was filming us with the video camera to get all the behind the scenes hi-jinx. Thank you so much Darcey and Nancy. And also thank you James Stubblefield for adding your own touch to Squeak the Mouse!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SOBc2pHFMVI/AAAAAAAAADo/GwhE75aAVVw/s200/DSCN0122.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251299259332243794" />

So, now I have the audio for it. I would like to add some sound effects and then have it composed. This will make a nice compliment for the children's book once it is illustrated and then they can be sold together as a package.

Then after the recording of "Squeak the Mouse." I drove back up into Los Angeles from the OC and attended the West Hollywood Book Faire.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SOBe3fWuVzI/AAAAAAAAADw/Ja8BwjFpjPs/s200/image002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251301472916625202" />

I walked around the book faire for about two hours before I went on stage. I received a lot of good info about writing groups in the local area....but I was mostly intrigued by how many writers were there selling their books. Naturally, I was there to read from mine but I was hoping to sell a few copies, you know? Or at least create a little buzz. But then you get there and realize that everyone is doing the exact same thing. Of course, I had an advantage, I was reading from mine so people could hear my words, listen to me as I recited my poetic verses. And it's great to meet the writers and then receive an autographed copy. (Lord knows, I have several in my library.) But it must be hard to sit at a table and have people stand there, judging you while they hold your book contemplating whether or not they want it to sit on their book shelf for all their friends and family to see. Yep, being a writer is hard. But I do truly believe that the rewards outweigh the tribulations.

But then it was time for me to head on stage. I was nervous. But then as my friends started to show up, I began to feel more at ease. I've been performing since I was 5. i can do this!

This was my first book faire and it was a complete success. One of my best readings, I think. And just a blast over all. Thank you to all of my friends who showed up: Regan, Veronica, Steven, DJ & Brittany (and their friends), and Jorge, Eddie, and Javiar & Steven, and my dear friend Steven Reigns. Also, I saw Glen walk by once or twice in the background while i was reading. And then poor Brad who desperately tried to make it from Venice but called me and told me he got there just as the festival closed. Next time Brad.

I look forward to being a part of the festival next year. It really was a lot of fun and the audience was amazing (since it was made of practically ALL of my friends!) But truly, they are amazing to keep supporting me even though some of them have heard my poems like a hundred times! Thank you all.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SOBhD2V2cAI/AAAAAAAAAD4/mDMgJFKbHPg/s200/DSCN0128.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251303884268662786" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SOBhEU-wQtI/AAAAAAAAAEA/1UDHoCkhEP4/s200/DSCN0133.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251303892493288146" />

Relaxing Weekend

One of the most important things about writing is being able to take some time off. Not that my mind ever stops working. I'm always composing in my head...and I do carry a notebook should I be struck with brilliance in the middle of the night (or while I'm on the crapper.) But one good thing every writer does, at least in my opinion, is take some time away to unwind and rest his mind.

So, I had my time to unwind this weekend when I went to go visit a good friend in Phoenix, AZ. I actually love Phoenix. I went in February for my birthday and seem to go back every other month or so. I honestly don't know what it is. I just enjoy it. I always have fun out there and will, on occasion, go with my best friend Mario.

So, I went this past weekend and now when I go I try to find locations where I could sell my book. Coffee shop/book stores, local haunts like that. However, my favorite watering hole there is The Teeter House.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SNE0lx-lN5I/AAAAAAAAADg/lndEFQ9wqBM/s200/House_Front.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247032864538965906" /> This is a great spot. It's quaint, charming, the people there are nice. The food is excellent and the tea is brewed fresh every day (and throughout the day). Every time I go to Phoenix I have to have lunch there. I'm drawn to it.

My friend and I decided to have lunch one day at a pizza joint in downtown Phoenix. Unbeknownst to us it was closed for lunch; however, the Teeter House across the street was open. We were hungry, it was nice day outside...and so we sat down, had lunch, and fell in love with the place. I will talk to them about having my book there. And why not? They support the arts. Jazz nights on the weekends. I have saw a local poet with his book there. Oh, and they have free wi fi....so I'm definitely going to have to go and get some writing done there.

But now that I'm back, and refreshed I can begin writing. I've spent half the day yesterday working on my screenplay. it's very close to being done...and I'm excited about that. It's my first full length feature screenplay.....

Robert Litton

I met with composer Robert Litton today. We've conversed here and there for over a year and today was the first time we actually met. He's a fun and charming man. I first heard his music a year ago when his CD was given to me at the LA Shorts Festival that was happening at the AMC Burbank theaters. I find his music inspiring and I always listened to the CD while writing.

We met today just as friends but I'm hoping he might be able to write a theme song for Squeak the Mouse. I'm supposed to go into my friend's studio at the end of the month and record an audio version of it....and I think his music will fit nicely with it. First, I worked on an action film called Ballistica, which kept me busy for 14 1/2 hour days and then the next day after that I started a horror film called Detention. It's fun but I am tired to say the least. I've been filming non-stop for most of the year. NOT that I'm complaining....however, it leaves little room for writing.

And my writing is frustrating because I've been working at it since I was 10....and it just seems that the harder I work at it...the longer it takes.

The show Boulevard with Elliot is going well. We're in the middle of a contract with SAG. Once that's done we can film. So, that's good. The project with Danny is not too bad either.....i'll finish writing next week before I start my new job. But i've tried for three years to get my play produced...and I don't know where to look, which avenue to follow. I need to finish my second book of poetry and I wish the illustrator for my children's book would contact me back....but he has seemed to disappear off the planet. Global warming, perhaps? Maybe he just spontaneously combusted!

With all that said, I've decided to slow down on the writing front....for now. Until, I can organize my life a bit better. That was the decision I had made earlier this week....until I talked to my friend Erik Powell in New York. He was trying to get his play produced as well. Then he decided to adapt it into a book and market it that way. Now, it's about to have it's first run in New York. I'm so proud of him.....so I have decided that even though my writing is just a hobby....that I'm going to adapt my play "You Can Call Me Eve" into a book. I've toyed with the idea for a while.....so I think it should be done. So for the next two - three months I will be working on that while I film.

I guess i'm just a glutton for punishment....but writing is a must.

Oh, and I must mention that I'm going to be acting in a play in November. Whew! Hopefully I'll be able to squeeze in a trip to London. I've always wanted to go and I've never been...and as a writer I think it would be the trip to help to kick start my creativity, especially since a trip to Paris could happen while I'm there. ;)

Boulevard

So, I have submitted the first draft of Boulevard to my co-creator Elliot. He has the funding for it...and most of the crew and actors....he just needs a script. Since he's a SAG actor he has to get a SAG contract in order to shoot.....so my goal this week is to write a script that he can submit to SAG and then we can get started on filming right away.

Everything is hush-hush right now. But I think it's going to be a GREAT project. I'm really, really excited about it and frankly...a little honored that he has faith in my ability to help him create this show.

So, he's on his way to pick me up in the Benz for a day of being an elite.....

Update:
So, we went to the Peninsula in Beverly Hills...the kind of hotel that charges $700 a night for a room. We went up to the 5th floor to the Garden Bar (which was right next to the pool..and very posh) and ordered a bottle of wine. Elliot ordered the macaroni and cheese (which may not sound good) until it arrives mixed with chocolate truffles! Does it get any better?

We figured if we want to write about the elite we had to act elite....we got a lot accomplished. After our two hour meeting/ lunch/ day of being snobs...he drove me home and now with a stack of notes I'm better equipped to sit down and write the new script. All can tell you is that the show will be called Boulevard. Check back for more info.....

Celebrate Good times....come on!

I want to give a big shout out to all of my peeps for coming to see me on Friday night and being a part of my celebration. Unfortunately, I planned it the same weekend as Comic Con (unbeknownst to me) and lost a few casualties; however, it was still a magnificent event.

It was a simple and elegant evening. My friend Tracy and I arrived about ten minutes past 8 and there were already a few people there. My friend Ian had driven in from Riverside with his new girlfriend, Tammy. I had never met her...and she is just absolutely delightful. A real knock out. I think Ian has definitely found a keeper. Goran and Jeremy were there. I was excited because I had met these two a few weeks before at a Smoking Cocktail event....and Jeremy and I had managed to stay in touch.....Jeremy is a delightful man who is here from France learning English.

Well as the night progressed more people showed up, including the graphic designer Armin and his wife. A lovely couple. So many people wanted to meet him as they were impressed with the cover this second time around.

So, drinks were had....laughter ensued...and fun was aplenty.

And that was how I celebrated the second edition release of Swimming the Storm.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SJibPRzdr-I/AAAAAAAAACw/m40BJRE3K3g/s200/DSCN7971.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231101653970431970" />
Tracy, me, and Jeremy

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SJib6Ki64dI/AAAAAAAAAC4/_1zlLcw2K7E/s200/DSCN7982.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231102390756368850" />
Poppy, me, Tookie

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SJicroCrObI/AAAAAAAAADA/PxcVwS77yH8/s200/DSCN7999.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231103240487778738" />
Me and Jesse

Swimming the Storm

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zqTDEof-Utk/SIp20jjNgZI/AAAAAAAAACc/xXCRchRX-zo/s200/stsmcfront.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5227120962785083794" />
Tonight, July 25th, 2008 at 8pm at O Bar in West Hollywood, CA I am celebrating the re-release of my first poetry book "Swimming the Storm." This book is very special to me. It's the first book I ever wrote since moving to LA 10 years ago.

The book, in itself, was a journey. I had joined a writing group. An all black spoken word group that met at the DWP building on the corner of Crenshaw Blvd and Kings. The lesson I learned in this group were most valuable to me as writer. Most of the people in the group were seasoned writers....and the people I met through them enhanced my ability as a writer. Up until this point I had dabbled in poetry slightly but was mostly writing fiction. (At that time, i was working on a novel) So, this was all new.

When I started performing, people started to know my work. And then people would ask if they could buy my work but I didn't have anything available. So, while in the writing group, I went through a terrible break up....and all of my poems were dealing with that issue....and that's where the motivation for Swimming the Storm came from. The first cover was designed by my close friend James and I printed 250 copies.

Five years later, I run into people who have visited my website or learn of my book from talking with me and want to purchase the book. I no longer have any copies left....so I made the decision to reprint it. The cover was designed by Armin Torrentos, Jr for the second addition....and tonight, July 25th, is the celebration of that reprint.
